Frequently Asked Questions

Does Medicaid cover Skilled Nursing facilities?

Yes. Medicaid is a State and Federal program that pays most nursing home costs for individuals with limited income. Coverage varies by state, and benefits are only available if the skilled nursing facility is government-certified. Many residents who initially pay privately may become eligible for Medicaid if long-term care is needed.

Does Medicare cover skilled nursing facilities?

Yes. Medicare Part A covers care in a Medicare-certified skilled nursing facility for up to 100 days per benefit period:

        ●  Days 1–20: Fully covered.

        ●  Days 21–100: Medicare covers all charges  except the co-insurance amount.

To qualify for Medicare coverage, patients must:

        ●  Have a three-day qualifying hospital stay.

        ●  Be admitted to the facility within 30 days of hospital discharge.

        ●  Have unused Medicare Part A days.

        ●  Have a diagnosis covered by Medicare.

If you require additional skilled care beyond a benefit period, you may qualify for a new 100-day period after going 60 consecutive days without skilled care and meeting eligibility criteria. Medicare Part B may also cover therapy services, such as physical, occupational, and speech therapy, once Part A coverage ends.

Is a Skilled Nursing facility a nursing home?

Skilled nursing and rehabilitation centers are sometimes called nursing homes. They are licensed and inspected facilities that provide both short- and long-term care with 24/7 medical supervision. Unlike assisted living or home care, these facilities are equipped to manage complex medical needs and rehabilitation.

How much does a skilled nursing facility cost?

Costs vary depending on payment method:

        ●  Medicaid: Covers most costs for eligible patients.

        ●  Medicare: Covers care in a certified facility as described above.

        ●  Private Pay: Many residents initially pay out of pocket; long-term residents may later qualify for Medicaid.

        ●  Medigap: Private insurance that helps cover costs not included under Medicare, such as co-insurance or extended stays.

        ●  Long-Term Care Insurance: Policies differ; consult your insurance provider or the NAIC for details.

Do skilled nursing facilities have doctors?

Yes. Skilled nursing facilities coordinate care with your primary doctor. The facility team—including nurses, therapists, and support staff—follows your doctor’s orders and conducts daily assessments to create a personalized care plan. This plan outlines:

        ●  Services you need

        ●  Who will provide them

        ●  How often services are provided

        ●  Any necessary equipment

        ●  Dietary needs and other details

Doctors work closely with the facility staff to monitor progress, adjust treatments, and ensure safe, effective care.
